He has represented England in many matches, such as in Twenty20 International and the cricket world cup. He has led the team to victory numerous times. Under his leadership, the cricket squad won the 2019 Cricket World Cup and became champions for the first time in their history.

Jos recently participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL). If you want to know more about his performance, keep reading.

Jos Buttler, COVID-19 and Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020

When the pandemic started, IPL was suspended indefinitely to prevent contagion and due to lockdown orders. Jos Buttler and other cricket players were gutted due to the suspension. In a BBC podcast, Buttler said that he was desperate to be part of the 13th IPL, which was set to take place this March.

He had been part of two franchises of the IPL in the past and was prepared to be a part of it this year as well. In the podcast, he stated, “There’s no doubt that it (IPL) has helped English cricket grow and the numbers of players who were involved in the last few years.”

IPL Makes a Comeback

Despite the initial setback, this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) started. The tournament is taking place in Abu Dhabi, with strict SOPs in place.

In the IPL, all team members and their families were required to quarantine themselves for two weeks when they arrived in the city for the tournament. Due to this reason, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals, Jos Buttler, was absent in the first match of the series.

Even the T20I series made a comeback even though doubts surfaced about its cancellation. Jos Buttler scored excellent points in the now concluded series. He played two matches and scored 44 and 77, through which he helped England seal the series.

The Defeat of Rajasthan Royals in IPL

Jos Buttler’s future is undoubtedly bright due to his talent and leadership skills. However, his recent performance and setbacks in the IPL, as captain of the Rajasthan Royals, may indicate that his talent may be faltering.

After suffering defeat for the third time in the series, and this time against the Mumbai Indians by 57 runs, Jos Buttler called the match frustrating in his recent tweet. However, Buttler was the highest run-getter in his team, scoring 70 runs during the match, but it was not enough to win as the Mumbai Indians scored 193 runs after opting to bat first.

The Victory of Rajasthan Royals against Chennai Super Kings

The Rajasthan Royals did, however, beat the Chennai Super Kings by scoring 70 more runs and attaining a 7-wicket win. Despite the other batsmen struggling on the pitch, Buttler almost singlehandedly brought the team to victory with his brilliant batting.

Due to his stellar performance in the match, he was also awarded 'Man of the Match,' making it Buttler's first IPL award. The Chennai Super Kings team captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, made the match even more memorable by gifting Jos Buttler his 200th IPL match jersey.

Buttler’s Overall Performance in IPL

The batsman has earned a few low scores despite having brought his franchise to victory in the recent IPL match. The Royal’s coach, Andrew Macdonald, contemplated moving Buttler back to the top to give them a better chance at qualifying for playoffs. As a result, the coach and team management placed players Ben Stokes and Robin Uthappa at the top, hoping   Buttler could make the finishing kicks.

His captain, Steve Smith, and the Chennai Super Kings batman said the following about Jos Buttler's recent performance in the IPL, "Those kinds of players at the back end win you games, so it's a difficult one. I heard Jos loves batting at the top as well, so that conversation is a difficult one, but it provides such great stability in the middle, and the power and innovation that he's got is second to none. So, obviously we're lucky to have a player like Jos and the ability that he's got and the versatility he has in his batting as well."

He joked that he would want people to keep guessing about where he positions the batsman.

Overall Assessment

The performance of Jos Buttler has been quite impressive in this series. His form has been great during the entire tournament. But his role, which was changed from opener to finisher, after a series of mishaps was very much for the better.

Had he maintained this position from the beginning, the Rajasthan Royals would not be scraping the bottom of the scraps as they currently are. This mistake on the part of the management certainly ended up costing them a ton.

Final Thoughts

There seems to be no doubt about the stellar performance of Jos Buttler throughout his career. Particularly within the IPL, even with his back against the wall, the talented cricketer still spearheaded a few wins for his franchise and won himself his first-ever man of the match award.
